Celtic Turtle

Students will create this enchanting Celtic turtle lamp.  Students will learn woodburning and gold-leafing techniques, to create this wonderful turtle riding an ocean wave of Turkish beads.  The light shines through the assorted colors and sizes of Turkish beads. Sandy has a unique and easy was to work with gold-leaf.  All students should be able to complete the project.

Infinity Twist Pine Needle Rim & Porcelain Beads

This is an all day class


You will get lots of practice on adding porcelain beads to your gourd basket using a continuous pine needle coil. Your basket will be finished off with an infinity twisted rim that is difficult to see where it starts and stops but easy to achieve.

Instructor will provide: Prepared gourd, glycerinated pine needles, waxed linen, porcelain beads, stitching needle and a detailed tutorial to be emailed after the class.

Students need to bring: Sharp scissors, needle nose pliers and fine tipped wire cutters

   

Making and Using Embellishment on Faux Suede and Metallic bowl

Students will learn to make their own molds and embellishments as well as making and applying faux suede and metallic paints. They will also be applying finished embellishments to their bowls. The classes will be using Quik aluminum, 2 part silicone for molding, acrylic paints and a suede medium.

Instructor will provide: Metallic Paints, acrylic paints, suede medium, paint roller and pan, mold putty, quick aluminum, 10 minute casting resin, glue, tiles, rubber gloves, mixing cup for suede medium, cups for water, painters tape, gourds, misc items needed for clean up by students.

Instructor will provide a gourd bowl approximate diameter is 8in to 9 in, and height is 6 in to 7 in.

Students must brong: An apron, 3m mask,paint brushes, Stadler compass if you have one. (I will have some extras student may borrow in needed), heating tool (small blow dryer works best on acrylic paints)

   

From seeds come flowers

We will create daisies around a gourd using seeds from a honeydew melons, alcohol inks for the stems, quickwood for the center of the flower,  painting the seeds for the daisy and then weaving a simple rim to complete the gourd

Stamp, Doodle and Coil

Students will stamp designs and doodle with permanent inks and then open coil with round reed to finish off their designed gourd. The inside of the gourd may be painted to accent the entire art piece.

Spiral Woven Gourd

This is an all day class

In this class we will weave a spiral design. You will learn how to add spokes and weave a triple twine weave. The contrasting colors create a striking design. Several different color combinations will be available. We will not be doing the woodburning on the gourd but I will give you a pattern to do later.

Good Luck Elephant

Elephants with their trunks uplifted have historically been associated with good luck. Come create your own good luck piece by learning how to burn and shade to create a 3-D look on your elephant.

Burlap and Buttons

In this fun class students will create a one of a kind bowl or vase using alcohol inks as the coloring agent.  Students will then be instructed on how to apply a unique rim treatment and embellishment using burlap and a variety of buttons and natural pods.  The finished project is full of interesting textures and colors.  No tools or materials will be required of the student for this class!

Students will learn how to use a pre-printed pattern on Stick n'Burn to transfer the scene to their gourds.  After completing the pyrography, they will use painters' tapes to create additional design areas for carving, filigree, and coloring, and will burn the outlines made by the tapes.  They will have the opportunity to carve and filigree at least one of those areas.  Additional areas may be carved/filigreed, if time allows.  They will use GourdMaster (GM) ink dyes to color certain areas.

Instructor will provide: Cleaned/cut/sanded gourd; GM ink dyes; sealer/varnish; painters' tape; non-slip shelf liner; sandpaper; vinyl gloves; brush basins; brushes; sponges; felt squares; paper towels; tutorial with instructions, pre-printed pattern, a full color photo of completed project in a vimyl sheet cover; extra scissors and a couple of heat guns for those who may not have one.
Instructor will provide a gourd 10-13" Tall x 8-9" Diameter

Students must bring: Adjustable-temperature wood burner with a writing pen/tip and a medium ball pen/tip (a craft burner is not recommended); a rotary tool/Dremel with burrs for carving, smoothing, and filigree work; a respirator/dust mask; and protective glasses; apron/smock to protect clothing; and a heat gun (not hair drier).  This class is not intended for beginners, so students should be familiar with the operation of their tools to assure adequate time to complete the project.  NOTE:  the following burrs were used by the instructor:  small wheel cutter, fine-grit short cylinder, carbide half dome, medium diamond- coated cylinder, small diamond-coated flame, and a GM fili-point.  See photo.

Carved Bonsai Tree Bowl

This is an all day class

Participants will learn to power carve and cut out the bonsai tree on a gourd. You will learn to transfer a furnished pattern to a gourd, learn to outline the pattern and cut away the gourd surface, define which areas are up and down, how to create the appearance of depth and how to rough out and finish the carving. We will color the gourd, wood burn the borders and add gold-leaf. We will have a detail discussion on power carving tools, burrs and their uses. We will discuss the different types of burrs and how multiple burrs can do the same work.

The instructor will provide detailed instructions (tutorial), outline pattern, a gourd power tool handout, a seven inch craft-ready gourd, transfer paper, pencils, pens and markers, ink dye and applicators, gold-leaf and adhesive, electrical needs and table protection. Instructor will have a few carving machines with burrs and micro saws to try, but each student must bring their own.
The instructor will provide a 7" craft-ready bowl.

Students will needs to bring a micro carver or Dremel type flex-shaft carving tool with all the carving burrs you have. (We will discuss their uses). Also bring a micro gourd saw and a variable temperature wood-burner with a skew tip. Bring a breathing mask or respirator, eye protection, your gourd tool kit and a desire to learn and have fun.

   

Mini Vase & floral arrangement

Students will create a mini- vase with a wax coiled rim, mount on natural rock or limb with varied natural embellishments and then create a floral arrangement to complete their project.

The Wolf

This class is for intermediate and advanced painters. Painted on a 12 inch bushel gourd. This is a close up study of a wolf’s eye and facial features using dry brushing and innovative eye techniques.

We will create a Snowman-Hobo out of a penguin gourd.
You will work with quick wood to create face, arms, scarf and shoulder bag for snowball or flowers if you wish.
