Black Walnut Pine Needle Basket

Coiling techniques for baskets, as well as gourd art.  Student will coil around a black walnut slice, using glycerin treated needles, waxed linen thread and beads to create a basket approximately 5" x 5" and a minimum of 2" high (higher if the student has time). Students will coil using 2 different stitch types and 2 thread colors.  They will learn how to add new threads, change thread colors and a clean finish to the rim. Discussion will include how to work with cabochons, agates and other objects for basket centers as well as creating floating coils and windows on other baskets as well as on gourds.  All supplies and a complete tutorial will be provided.

Student must bring: small pair of sharp scissors, small pair of needle nose pliers.

Pointillism Wolf Class

Students will learn a stunning shading technique of creating a wolf all done in dots. It is a very relaxing method.

Students must bring a clean cut and ready gourd of any shape, bigger than the design size which is 61/2" tall by 41/2" wide.

Undulating Weaving With Dreamcatcher

This is a fun weaving class using a variety of materials. Students will learn how to insert spokes in top of a gourd bowl. Techniques include twinning and triple twine, continuous weave, increasing and decreasing, and a covered rolled border. Materials will include reed, yarns, seagrass, cedar bark, philodendron sheaths, and pods. We will also add a dream catcher on the front of the gourd. We will not decorate the gourd. I will have them cut, clean, dyed, and holes drilled.  Good class for beginners and experienced weavers. Lots of colors and textures to choose from.

Students must bring: scissors, bucket to soak reed, spray bottle, an awl or flat head screwdriver, towel, and an apron. I will have extra buckets, scissors, and spray bottles.

Carved Bonsai Tree Bowl

Participants will learn to power carve the bonsai tree and cut-out the background on a gourd. You will learn to transfer a furnished pattern to a gourd,
cut away the gourd surface, define which areas are up and down, how to create the appearance of depth and how to rough out and finish the carving. We will color the gourd, wood burn the borders and add gold-leaf. We will have a detail discussion on power carving tools, burrs and their uses. We will discuss the different types of burrs and how multiple burrs can do the same work.

Students must bring: a micro carver or Dremel type flex-shaft carving tool with all the carving burrs you have. (We will discuss their uses). Also bring a micro gourd saw and a variable temperature wood-burner with a skew tip. For you protection please bring a breathing mask or respirator, eye protection, and staining gloves.

Turtle Hatchling

Create your very own turtle hatchling ornament.  The student will be instructed by Terry on how to create this wonderful baby turtle hatching from his egg "gourd".  Sandy will instruct the student on how to paint the turtle and egg shell.    What wonderful additions to your holiday tree.

Twined Base

Friday Morning Technique Class 8:30-10:30

That extra touch, just like putting a rim on a gourd, sometimes makes the difference.  In this class the student will learn to twine a base on the bottom of the gourd.  This is a way to slightly elevate the gourd to allow it to sit when a gourd does not have a completely flat bottom.  The class will include marking and drilling holes in addition to weaving the bottom.  A 5-7” diameter prepared gourd bowl will be provided, along with the lacing material. 

Students should bring a compass pencil (a carpenter’s compass works well) or circle templates 4” and smaller.  Some compasses and templates will be provided in the class, but will need to be shared.  Also bring an awl and small needle nose pliers. 

Students should finish weaving the bottom in the class.  However, if they do not, instructions will be provided to finish on their own.

Easy Marbling Technique

I will have extra ornament gourds with eye hooks that you can purchase to make more during the class.

Spiraling Knot

Friday Technique Class 10:30-12:30

In this class the student will have an elegant gourd by using chair cane to tie a knot.  Students will first apply coloring and a sealer to a 5-7” banana gourd.  Next will be the process of wrapping the cane around the gourd.  The gourds can be used decoratively with a base or hung on a stand.  They also make wonderful ornaments when made with smaller gourds.

Students should finish in the class.  However, if they do not, instructions will be provided to finish on their own.
 
Students must bring: a sharp pair of pointed scissors or a utility knife (X-acto), apron, gloves and a heat gun.

I will provide 2 gourds for these "Birdies". One for the techniques used and one ready to paint and finish. You will learn the process used from start to finish in making these precious "Birdies"! From patching the whole made (from cleaning out the insides of the gourd) to shaping the beak and tail. You will be using Quickwood and a mold for the wings on the birds. Lastly you will finish these birds with a textured paint medium to give the "Birdies" their feathers. May not have time to finish the second bird, but you will go with the knowledge, technique and supplies to finish it!

Students must bring: Rubber gloves. Heat gun if student has one, if not it one can be shared.

Kudzu Leaf Paper Making

Use Rit dye to make colorful sheets of kudzu paper for insides of gourds and more. Your wet paper dries overnight. Dry paper is provided to cut out local petroglyph designs used on gourds in many ways.

This little lady will bring a smile to your face! We will learn how to adhere & mix a variety of incompatible materials: plastic, textile, foam & metal. Then I will show you how to use Powertex & Color Tricx metallic pigments to blend it all together to create her terracotta, flower pot dress. Feel free to bring your own small embellishments, beads, charms & cotton fabrics. Floral print fabric will be provided for the dress but you are welcome to bring your own laces, doilies or other materials to play with.

Students must bring: a box of disposable gloves. (Bring a whole box, this is really messy fun!) Needle nosed wire pliers, a heat gun for drying as needed. Paint brush for detail painting. Pen and paper for additional notes, if desired.

Black and White Doubled

Make a wonderful contrasting art piece by spiral slewing natural round reed on contrasting black round reed. Finish off your piece with a simple triple twine and double braided border. All of this is done on a dyed black gourd that has been prepped for you.
Fun class, gourd all prepped, with spokes inserted, an opportunity to learn some new weaving techniques.

Tribal Cord with Turtle

The beautiful rim on this bowl will be created using tribal cording that has many colors.  The cording is applied using a stitch that hides the rim of the cording. Students are combining techniques of wood burning, dimpling, and painting.. 
Students must bring: Dremel for holes and a dremel and or a carver for dimpling.  Gloves and usual supplies for a gourd class.  Wood burner for the turtle design with a skew or small round ball bit.

InLace for Beginners

If you are still staring at that box of InLace you bought a few years ago, this class is for you. Previously, my InLace classes have been held over two days as the resin takes 24-hours to harden. In this revised class, students will be leaving with the resin partially hardened and with the knowledge of how to sand and polish the inlay after the appropriate amount of time.  Students will transfer a pattern, woodburn the image, carve out areas and inlay the resin.  Then, using a hardened sample provided by the instructor, they will learn sanding, buffing, and polishing. Any added background design and colors will be added at the students leisure.

Students must bring: woodburner and favorite tip, carver with several sizes of ball burs, an inverted cone bur, safety glasses, face mask, ball point pen. PLEASE know how to use your tools and have appropriate collets for each bur.
