Dye / Coiling / Wire-Wrap

We will start by experimenting with alcohol inks to produce different patterns on gourd shards. There are so many possibilities! Pick your favorite pattern and colors, then color your gourd. 

You will then add a sea grass rim with tails that will frame a glass embellishment. 
The glass embellishment will be wire wrapped then attached to your gourd. Many colors of glass are available.

Instructor will provide: handout, prepared gourd, dye, alcohol, brushes, containers for alcohol & dyes, wax paper, seagrass, tapestry needle, waxed linen, sinew, glass medallions, wire, pencil, gloves, paper towels, fixitif, finish spray

Instructor will provide a gourd approx. 5-6" wide X 6" tall

Good Luck Elephant

Elephants with their trunks uplifted have historically been associated with good luck. Come create your own good luck piece by learning how to burn and shade to create a 3-D look on your elephant.

Egg Gourd Kaleidoscope

Remember the wonderful world of color and patterns that you can find in a kaleidoscope?  These little egg gourd kaleidoscopes are small treasurers for people of all ages and a welcomed gift for someone.  Egg gourds will be dyed with Alcohol Inks and may wood burned (students choice). Students will learn how to put together the Kits that the instructor provides and patterns for the outside of the gourd.

Instructor will provide: Kits, inks, and all supplies needed to set up and clean up.  Egg gourds will be prepped for ink, and drilled the proper opening to take the kits.

Students must bring: Masks, aprons, and wood burner.
   

Skirting the Perimeter

In this class, students will paint and glaze/varnish their gourds.  After drying, they will learn how to crochet a lovely flared rim around the top of their project.

Instructor will provide: Cleaned/cut/sanded/drilled gourds; glaze/varnish; acrylic paint; brush basins; brushes/sponges; vinyl gloves; crochet hooks and threads; paper towels; tutorial with instructions and full-color photo of project in a plastic sheet cover.  The instructor will also have extra scissors and a couple hair driers available for the students use on a first-come-first-served basis.  If students do not bring their own, they may have to wait to use these items, which can delay completion of their project.
Instructor will provide a gourd 4-6" Tall x 4-6" Diameter

Students must bring: Apron/smock to protect their clothing; sharp scissors, and a hair drier/heat tool.

Acorn Basket

This is a really fun class where you can find ways to use some of those gourd scraps. The Caps are started around a gourd stem/shard. You will be using glycerinated pine needles so they are extremely flexible and can make the tight radius around the stem.  You will learn how to shape your cap to fit the acorn. We will learn several different stitches that will help create a charming Acorn Basket. The Cap edge will be completed with decorative stitching.

Instructor will provide: Gourd, glycerinated pine needles, gourd stem/shard, artificial sinew, stitching needle and a detailed tutorial to be emailed after the class.

Students must bring: sharp scissors, small needle nose plyers, jewelry wire cutter.

   

Blue Corn Kachina Doll with Powertex

This brilliantly colored gourd doll reflects the beauty of the Hopi Kachina tradition. Honoring the life givers, corn and squash (gourds!). Our doll will be assembled using dried corn and gourds. Learn how to dip and wrap fabric using Powertex textile hardener. And finally, decorating our cut gourd and crown using acrylic paints. The gentle spirit of this lovely wall hanging bless your home with beauty and inspiration for years to come!

‚Powertex materials and art supplies to complete the project
Instruction sheets and supply list outlining the complete project

Students must bring: A box of disposable gloves. (Bring a whole box, this is really messy fun!)
A heat gun for drying as needed.
Pen and paper for additional note taking if desired.
An apron or smock

 

   

Multi Media Jewelry

This will be a fun class to explore how to put together multi media for surface design and create one of a kind jewelry pieces. These techniques will also work on larger pieces as well. Will be exploring embossing, glues that are heated, eggshells and other surface embellishments. All students will leave class with at least 3 finished pieces.
