Twined Base

F-PM-8

Nancy Amburgey

Cost $25.00

The twined base technique on a gourd adds that extra touch, just like putting a rim on a gourd.  Sometimes it makes the difference.  In this class the student will learn to twine a base on the bottom of the gourd.  This is a way to slightly elevate the gourd to allow it to sit when a gourd does not have a completely flat bottom.  The class will include marking and drilling holes in addition to weaving the bottom.  This technique will be helpful for other gourd projects you develop.  A 5-7" diameter gourd bowl will be provided, along with the lacing material.

Students should finish the gourd in class.  However, if they do not, instructions will be provided to finish on their own.

Students, Please Bring:

An awl, compass and small needle nose pliers.

In this class we'll be exploring the natural textures that make things real: scales, feathers, fur, skin, and tree bark. We will make each texture out of Apoxie Sculpt on wood panels so you can understand how to create each texture. We will explore many regular and irregular tools to help us along the way. This class is focusing on techniques so we won't leave with a fully finished project - but once you've learned these sculpting techniques, you'll be able to make anything!

Spiraling Knot

F-PM-18

The knotted gourd technique will teach you to tie a knot on a banana gourd with two different methods.  One with and one without a spiral.  The student will have an elegant gourd by using chair cane (rattan) to tie a knot.  Students will first apply coloring and a sealer to a 5-7" banana gourd.  Next will be the process of wrapping the cane around the gourd to tie a knot.  The gourds can be used decoratively with a base or hung on a stand.  They also make wonderful ornaments.

Students should finish both gourds in class.  However, if they do not, instructions will be provided to finish on their own.
